1967 Vollstedt Bryant Heating Monoposto

  • Chassis Number: 67B
Race car builder Rolla Vollstedt built several Indianapolis cars over his long career, including two 1967 Vollstedt chassis. The list of racers who drove designer/builder Rolla Vollstedt's 1967 Ford-powered Indy Car #67B reads like a Who's Who of motorsport: Cale Yarborough, Can-AM and Trans-AM champ George Follmer, Arnie Knepper, F5000 champ John Cannon, Art Pollard, Larry Dickson, Wally Dallenbach, Jim Malloy, Le Mans winner and F1 ace Chris Amon, and Indy 500 winner Gordon Johncock. The final and most famous name on the list is 1963 and 1965 Formula 1 World Champion and 1965 Indy 500 winner Jim Clark who raced it in the 1967 Riverside (CA) Indy car race. It was the only time Clark raced any Indy car other than a Lotus, the marque that carried him to both his World Championships and the 1965 Indy 500 victory.

This car was the primary car used by Vollstedt from 1967 through 1971 including in three Indianapolis 500s. At the Rex Mays 300 in Riverside, California, Clark helped develop the adjustable rear wing, which was the first time such a device was used in racing anywhere in the world. The original wing from that event is still fitted to the car today. In 1972, at the end of its racing career, the car was involved in a serious accident at Phoenix International Raceway and was not repaired until its current owner acquired it in 2007. A careful and faithful restoration took nearly five years and sourced as many original parts and components as rigorous historic research allowed. The car has been restored to its race configuration when Jim Clark last competed in it.

This car was also featured in Paul Newman's film Speedway in the late 1960s.
