Legendary Portland, Oregon Indy car builder Rolla Vollstedt built two cars for the 1967 Indianapolis 500 on aluminum chassis. The primary car used by Vollstedt from 1967 through 1971 was chassis 67B, racing in three Indy 500s. Stock car driver Cale Yarborough was employed for the 1967 Indy 500 to drive this car entered as the #21. Yarborough started 20th and crashed on lap 176 to finish the race in 17th position.

In November 1967, with the help of Firestone, Jim Clark was contracted to race for Vollstedt in the Rex Mays 300 in Riverside, California. Driving this Vollstedt was Clark's only time in an Indy Car not driving a Lotus. It was at this race that Clark and Vollstedt developed the use of an adjustable rear wing/spoiler on the Indy car. It was the first time such a device was used in Indy Car Competition. That wing worked so well that it led Clark to take the concept back to England for use on his Formula 1 Lotus.

Rolla Vollstedt continued to run the 67B car through 1968 and then fitted them with turbo Ford engines for a limited season in 1969 with Larry Dickson driving in the 1969 Indy 500. Dickson brought home Vollstedt's best Indy finish of 9th. John Cannon raced the car in 1970 and finished 4th at Indianapolis Raceway Park still running on alp 59 of 60 when Al Unser crossed the finish line to win the race. The Vollstedt finally retired at the end of that season.
