Don Yenko on Canonsburg, Pennsylvania was one of America's premier road racers and high-performance Chevy dealers. In 1969, 201 examples of the Chevy Camaro received their 425 horsepower L-72 427 engines factory-installed via Chevy's infamous COPO (Corporate Office Production Order) back-office ordering system. This COPO system was normally utilized for large-scale commercial, police, and taxi fleet orders; Chevy's Product Promotion Engineering head, Vince Piggins exploited the system to aide Chevy enthusiasts who were seeking to circumvent General Motors' self-enforced racing ban dating back to 1963, as well as its corporate policy forbidding the factory installation of engines larger than 400 cubic inches in the F-Body Camaro.
The Yenko cars received both Chevrolet's COPO 9561 (High-Performance) and 9737 (Sports Car Conversion) packages, including the 425 HP 427-CID L-72 big-block engine plus a larger cooling system and heavy-duty suspension. Other items included a Cowl induction hood, power front disc brakes, 4.10:1 Positraction rear axle, 15x7 wheels, E70x15 tires, a 140-mph speedometer, front and rear spoilers, and larger 13/16-inch front anti-sway bar. Signature Yenko finishing touches included a Stewart-Warner tach, custom wheels, unique Yenko 'S/C' graphics, stripes, and Yenko 'sYc' (signifying 'Yenko Super Car') seat-back accents. Yenko also removed the 427 engine's air-cleaner lid with a more accurate 450 HP rating sticker.
Six exterior colors were available on the 1969 Yenko Camaro including Daytona Yellow, such as on this particular example. It has a factory-original four-speed and is one of the last of the 201-car series built, being car number 194. This example was shipped from Yenko Chevrolet to Muscatel Chevrolet in Fargo, North Dakota, where it was sold to first owner Darrell Ramstad on October 15, 1969. More recently, it has received a complete restoration to as-new original condition, including its Daytona Yellow exterior finish, black vinyl top, and black standard interior.
