1970 Shadow MKI Spyder

The low-profile AVS Shadow MKI required many revisions before it could be raced. The rules changed, outlawing the movable air dams from the original concept and totally transforming the car from its original design. The car as presented here represents the configuration that debuted at Shadow's first race. This car debuted at the June 1970 Mosport Can-Am race driven by George Follmer. The car only ran two races before it was seriously damaged while being transported. Don Nichols ran out of money and the car was parked. After many years in Don Nichols Shadow shop, the pieces were gathered together and the car was restored in 2020, 50 years after its original racing debut. The tangerine color of the car was chosen by Don to match the filing cabinet in his office. That cabinet still exists today. The car started the 1970 Can-Am races at Mosport and Mont Tremblant but failed to finish either race.
