This 1930 Packard 'Model 734 Speedster' Runabout is powered by a 385 cubic-inch L-head straight 8-cylinder engine with a dual-throat Updraft carburetor producing 145 horsepower at 3,400 RPM. There is a four-speed manual gearbox, four-wheel mechanical drum brakes, and a semi-elliptical leaf spring suspension.
During the 1960s, Bill Harrah acquired an unknown number of Speedsters and restored three vehicles. After their competition, there were many parts left over.
This vehicle is not recognized as one of the original 734 Speedsters because of the inability to identify the original vehicle or vehicles from which the parts were derived. It has an authentic chassis sourced from Harrah's stash, along with authentic Packard 734 pieces and parts, including the motor and coachwork. These pieces were placed together, creating this vehicle. Its chassis, engine and gearbox numbers are within the range known to contain all the known 734 Speedsters. The engine and gearbox numbers are the same.
This Speedster Runabout has a pair of Packard script junior Pilot Rays, dual C.M. Hall spotlights, wind wings, dual enclosed sidemount spares with mirrors, chrome wire wheels, tire supply air compressor, muffler cutout, and leather spring gaiters. It is the only known example with the dashboard mounted North East tachometer.
During the early 1990s, this Packard was given a restoration that consumed 54 months. It has the boattail Runabout body, distinguished by its tapered tail with a hatch to access limited luggage storage. It has an offset passenger's seat placed several inches behind that of the driver.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2023
