1932 Packard Model 900 Light Eight Navigation
The Great Depression ushered in a period of hardship as jobs and fortunes were lost. Like most automaker's, Packard had a sharp decline in sales as the number of wealthy buyers continued to decline. To counter the decline, Packard introduced the Light Eight in 1932, the company's first attempt at a lower-priced model. Using the Standard Eight's 120 horsepower engine with a smaller, lighter chassis, the 'Light Eight' was less expensive and a better performer than many other Packards. At the front was a unique 'shovelnose' radiator shell.
The Ninth Series Standard Eight Packard models for 1932 were offered on wheelbases of 129.5 and 136.5 inches and were priced between $2,485 and $3,450. The Light Eight had a 127.75 inch wheelbase, and although it represented a significant value (with prices that began at $1,795), it was simultaneously too expensive to attract meaningful sales volume and too cheaply priced to make economic sense for Packard. A total of 6,750 examples were built in 1932, its only year of production.
This particular Light Eight Coupe Roadster was sold new by the L.R. Mack dealership in Albany, New York, on April 28, 1932. It was restored for Don and Barbara Zerth of Lansing, Illinois, by Fran Roxas. Upon completion, achieved its Premier First at the end of a run of four consecutive 100-point scores, and won its class at the CCCA Museum Experience twice, in 1991 and 2003.
