1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Navigation
This 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Saloon wears coachwork by H.J. Mulliner. An order for the car was placed by The Car Mart Ltd. on July 25th, 1933, and the short Continental chassis was specified. The car's first owner was E. (Edward Henry) Hillman Esq. of Ramford, founder of 'Hillman's Saloon Coaches and Airways Limited. The chassis was completed on September 5 and underwent testing until September 25. Upon competition, it was sent to H.J. Mulliner on October 4 for its custom coachwork. Although it was initially specified to have side-mounted spares, a switch was made before delivering, selecting a single spare in the rear. Pre-delivery testing at H.J. Mulliner was completed on November 24, and the original guarantee was issued on January 10, 1934. J. Hutton Esq. of Nottingham was added to the registration card on August 13, 1934.
As the hostilities of World War II began to increase, it is believed that the Rolls-Royce was placed into storage. By May 31st, 1957, the car had new ownership in Birmingham and was given registration plate 'AXE 381.' As the 1950s came to a close, the car left England for the first time, and was imported to the United States, presumably by William H. Palmer of Deerfield, Illinois.
James F. Kearney of Oak Park, Illinois, acquired the car on December 2, 1960, and kept it until around 2005. During his 44 years of ownership, the car received fastidious care, maintenance and exhaustive restoration work.
This Phantom II wears a two-tone grey paint scheme with blue pinstripes and a blue leather interior. Styling features of this car include a slightly raked windscreen with hand crank mechanisms, a long louvered hood, a single covered spare tire, and a low-slung roof line.
