1998 Chrysler Chronos Concept Navigation
The 1998 Chrysler Chronos was created during a time when the corporation was developing the brand's identity and openly experimenting with the distinct proportions of a rear-wheel drive chassis. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s, Chrysler had a relationship with the Italian design house Ghia. This partnership led to the creation of several stunning machines, including this particular concept (inspired by the 1955 Ghia Falcon concept) and the innovative rocket-inspired Chrysler Turbine, whose bodies were built by Ghia. This Chrysler Chronos Concept ultimately inspired the 2005 Chrysler 300C.
Some of the Chronoss design highlights include a massive wheelbase, 13 1 inches from axle to axle; a Chrysler Airflow-like front grille, balanced wheel emblems which do not rotate with the tires, centered dual exhaust ports, and an amazing wood, leather, and carbon fiber interior which houses such niceties as a center console humidor.

Chrysler introduced this Chronos Concept Sedan just before the acquisition of the Chrysler Corp. by Germany's Daimler-Benz AG. The design inspirations of this long-hooded sedan were from the classic-era British sports cars and a trio of 1950s Chrysler concepts, including the 1953 Special, the 1953 D'Elgance, and the 1955 Falcon.
The car had a modified Viper-based chassis and rode on large 20- and 21-inch wheels and tires. The engine was a 6-liter SOHC V10 rated at 350 horsepower. The wood-, chrome- and leather-lined interior had equally impressive features as the aggressively sporty outer skin. There were dual-centered tailpipes, wheel emblems weighted and balanced to always stay upright, and a console-mounted humidor for cigar-aficionado occupants.
'If you're going for the flagship of the Chrysler Brand, and the Chrysler Chronos clearly is,' wrote then Design Vice President Tom Gale at the time, 'then everything must add up. The look must fit. The quality must be appropriate. And the ride must be exhilarating. It has to totally quench the thirst for perfection.'
