Pontiac introduced the Star Chief in 1954 and it remained in production through 1966. For 1955, the Star Chief had a dynamic new panoramic body styling with an 11-inch rear frame extension and featured tapered slanting vertical slash moldings and three stylized star emblems on the front fenders and doors. The 1955 Pontiac benefited from more changes than any model since the Pontiac had first been introduced in 1926, as it had a reported 109 new features and three new bodies. Power was supplied by the 287 cubic-inch 'Strato Streak' V8 engine that developed 173 horsepower with the synchromesh transmission and 180 with the Hydra-Matic. This engine was smaller, more rigid, and adaptable to higher compression ratios. The 90 mph top speed made the Star Chief ideal for the modern highways being constructed across the United States.
