1984 Mazda RX-7

The 1984 Mazda RX-7 received a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and lockup torque converter as optional equipment. Another new addition was variable-assist power steering. The 2-door coupe with seating for two was available as the S, GS, GSL, and GSL-SE (the GSL-SE was a new-for-1984 option). Pricing began at $10,190 for the base S model and rose to $15,100 for the GSL-SE. The Wankel engine with two coaxial three-lob rotors displaced 70 cubic inches and offered 100 horsepower. The GSL-SE had an 80 cubic-inch Wankel rotary engine with 135 horsepower. They had recirculating ball steering, unibody construction, and disc brakes in both the front and rear. An automatic was available only on the GS and GSL models. Power steering could be found only on the GSL model.

Inside, Mazda installed a new instrument panel containing round dial controls. On the exterior, the front air dam added a slit to allow the brakes to cool. The rear control arms were relocated and a new larger high-performance, fuel-injected engine was added to the GSL-SE model.

The GSL-SE added low-profile Pirelli P6 tires, alloy wheels, modified suspension, and larger disc brakes. It also came standard with a sunroof, KAM/FM stereo radio with cassette player and graphic equalizer, cruise control, power windows, and air conditioning.

For 1985, there were very few changes, except for revised final-drive ratios.

1984 Mazda RX-7 For three generations, the Mazda RX-7 has brought pure sports car performance to the masses. The first generation of RX-7 was a concept car experiment, sold to the public (1979-1985) because of the enormous reaction it generated. The second generation (1986-1991/1992) was a continuation of the legend the previous cars began. The third and final generation (1993-2002) was and is a true supercar. Since 1979, the RX-7 has been one of the best-performing and most unique cars on the road. The Mazda RX-7 features a unique Wankle rotary engine.

To drive an RX-7 is like driving no other car (and until you do, you will have no way you can understand how these cars feel and perform), making the RX-7 a '5 times top 10 choice' of Car and Driver Magazine.

In 1969 Mazda Project engineer Akio Uchiyama began work on a two-seater sports car. Internally it was called project X020A and eventually became known as RS-X. The idea was to share a chassis from a production saloon, thus saving on production costs and limiting the time-to-market. This project continued until 1973, when the oil crisis finally put an end to the car. Around 1975 Sinpei Hanaoka,....

The most famous aspect of this vehicle is probably the engine. It was a revolutionary engine created by Felix Wankel and named the Wankel Rotary Engine. Inside an elongated chamber, a rotor with three curved sides revolves around a central driveshaft. Air and fuel enter from the sides and are compressed as the rotor spins. The result is the equivalent of a conventional combustion chamber.....
