1909 EMF Model 30

Although the existence of E-M-F was brief, lasting from 1909 through 1912, they ranked fourth in sales in United States production in 1909 and 1910 and second in 1911. The company was formed by Barney Everitt (a custom auto body builder), William Metzger (formerly of Cadillac), and Walter Flanders (Henry Ford's production manager), and its 'E-M-F' name was gifted from their surnames.

E-M-F emerged following a merger of the Wayne Automobile Company with the Northern Motor Car Company. Along with acquiring their plants and equipment, E-M-F gained Wayne designer William E. Kelly as chief engineer. Production commenced in the second half of 1908, and the E-M-F models were sold through Studebaker wagon dealerships.

E-M-F automobiles were medium-priced cars. The Model 30 had a sturdy, pressed-steel chassis frame with leaf spring suspension. The 226 cubic-inch Side-Valve inline four-cylinder engine had a single carburetor and delivered 30 horsepower. It had a three-speed manual gearbox and two-wheel drum brakes.

Although sales were strong, the company's reputation was tarnished due to poor quality, and its management was in turmoil due to disagreements among its three partners. Studebaker became dissatisfied with the situation and took control of the company in 1910. By 1913, all E-M-F cars were badged as Studebakers.

Studebaker repaired the company's reputation by paying mechanics to visit each unsatisfied owner and replace the defective parts in their vehicles. This monumental endeavor cost Studebaker approximately $1 million (USD).
