Two years after its 1962 introduction, the Pontiac Grand Prix had firmly established its reputation as a sporty Hardtop with clean styling and a vast lineup of big-inch V-8 powertrains. The performance-oriented Grand Prix replaced the Ventura, which became a luxury trim level of the full-size Catalina, and trimmed to standards similar to those of the larger top-line Bonneville. It wore distinctive taillights and front anodized grille, checkered flag badge in the concave section of the side spears, bucket seats on the interior upholstered in Morrokide vinyl, and nylon loop-blend carpeting on the floor and lower door panels. The standard 389 cubic-inch V8 engine with a Carter four-barrel carburetor in the 1962 Grand Prix was shared with the Bonneville. It had five main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, and delivered 235 horsepower at 3,600 RPM. Its wheelbase size of 120-inches was shared with the Catalina, which had grown approximately an inch-and-a-half for 1962, compared to the previous year. The 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix continued to rest on a 120-inch wheelbase, still shared with the full-size Catalina, and offered as a two-door hardtop with seating for five and priced at $3,500. It wore a deeply recessed grille with fine horizontal slats, 'Grand Prix' lettering on the left-hand grille, 'Grand Prix' lettering and badges located behind the front wheel cutout, headlights frenched into the front fenders and bumper, concave rear window treatments, and rectangular front parking lamps. Standard equipment included wood-grained trim for the dashboard and steering wheel, front foam seat cushions, center console, bucket seats, and dual exhaust.Pontiac produced 63,810 examples of the Grand Prix for 1964, a drop from the 72,959 produced a year earlier. Most were equipped with the Hydra-Matic transmission with 3,124 selecting the three-speed manual or four-speed manual with floor shift. Engines continued to be shared with the Bonneville including five 389 CID V8s and two 421 CID V8 options. The base 389 CID V8 used a Carter AFB four-barrel carburetor and delivering 303 horsepower with the Hydra-Matic (approximately 255 with the synchromesh). The highest state of tune for the 389 CID V8 was with three two-barrel carburetors delivering 330 horsepower at 4,600 RPM. The 421 CID V8 with four-barrel carburetion delivered 320 horsepower, and the three-two-barrel (Tri-Power) setup delivered 370 horsepower.The styling introduced in 1962 would continue through 1968, including a complete restyling for 1965 with more rounded bodylines with Coke-bottle profiles, and a slight increase to its wheelbase, now measuring 121-inches. The interiors received all-new instrument panels with greater use of walnut trim extending to the center console, bucket seats, and a new steering wheel with horn bars. Hazard flashers and air conditioning were added to the list of available options.

View info and historyThe Grand Prix gained a 'beak-nose' grille in 1968, with shock-absorbent plastic, a new front bumper, and a revised rear deck and bumper. The convertible body style introduced for 1967 did not re-appear for 1968. The 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix rested on a stretched version of the intermediate GM A platform called the G-Body, and wore new bodywork with a pronounced grille. This generation of styling persisted through 1972. The Grand Prix model would remain part of the Pontiac lineup through 2008.
