FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (April 5, 2016) – Auctions America saw a strong start to its 2016 auction season this past weekend (April 1 – 3), generating $20 million* in sales with 70 percent of all lots sold at its 14th annual Fort Lauderdale event. Widely respected and celebrated as South Florida's premier collector car show and auction, the multi-day event enjoyed strong attendance, with bidders hailing from 41 states across the U.S., along with 18 countries, including Japan, Brazil and Australia. Reflecting a continued enthusiasm and interest in the hobby, nearly 40 percent of bidders represented new clients to Auctions America.

'We're very happy with the results of our 14th annual Fort Lauderdale sale, which was highlighted by numerous spirited bidding contests, making it clear that the auction room was packed with serious collectors,' says Donnie Gould, President, Auctions America. 'We received highly positive feedback on the diversity of the offering, which is reflected in the top ten sales. From European sports and touring cars of every era through to iconic American classics and muscle and high performance late model collectibles, the group is a fantastic representation of the variety you'll find in Fort Lauderdale each year.'

Leading the top-sellers list was a restored, U.S.-delivery 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, which commanded $649,000 during Saturday's sale session, while a 1930 Bentley 'Blue Train' Re-creation, a wonderful interpretation of the fabled marque's history, also sold well at $522,500. The remaining results within the top five demonstrate that rare, best-of-category examples continue to bring strong prices at auction. The limited-production 1952 Mercedes-Benz 300 S, stunning in cream with a tan leather interior, achieved a respectable $506,000, leading a string of additional Mercedes-Benz tourers that sold well, including a 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 at $269,500 (pre-sale estimate $175,000-$225,000). Big-block American muscle also shined on the Fort Lauderdale stage, highlighted by a 430 hp 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Sport Coupe, one of just 69 built, for $404,250, and a 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, one of just 16 originally equipped with a four-speed manual transmission, at an above-estimate $330,000.

Additional highlights from the three-day sale included a 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz, which exceeded estimate at $264,000, and a 1999 Ferrari F355 Spider Serie Fiorano, which sold for a record $211,750. A rare 1966 Bentley S3 Continental Drophead Coupe by Park Ward illustrated the competitive bidding at the sale and was contested by numerous bidders both in the room and on the phone before eventually selling for $220,000— $60,000 above its high estimate.
