1962 Fiat 600D

The Fiat 500 and 600 models were some of the most popular automobiles in Europe. They were minimalistic, economical, stylish, and ideal for war-torn Europe still rebuilding after World War II. Production of the rear-engine, water-cooled Fiat 500 lasted from 1957 through 1975, with over 3.89 million examples built. The Fiat 600 followed in 1955 and continued through 1969 with 2.695 million built. Body styles included a two-door fastback sedan and a four-door Multipla mini MPV. It measured 3.22 m long and was the first unibody and rear-engined Fiat.

For 1962, in the United States, the 600D was available only as a two-door sedan with seating for four passengers. Pricing began at $1,250 and power was from an overhead-valve four-cylinder engine displacing 46.8 cubic inches and developing 32 horsepower at 4800 RPM and 36 ft-lbs of torque. It had three main bearings, solve valve lifters and a Weber single-barrel carburetor. The engine was mated to a four-speed manual transmission and the steering was by a worm and segment unit. Hydraulic drum brakes provided the stopping power.

New this year were modifications to the engine with higher compression. The starter now ignition-key activated. There were front vent wings and improved ventilation. Just like past years, a sunroof version was optional, with a roll-back fabric top.

Fiat 600 Jolly by Ghia
The Italian design house Ghia received some Fiat 600s in 1958 for conversion into the unique Jolly aimed at the wealthy European and U.S. markets. They were the brainchild of Fiat chairman Gianni Agnelli, who envisioned a small car that could be carried aboard his 82-foot ketch, Agneta, and be easily lowered over the side for local transportation at various Mediterranean ports of call. The idea proved popular and was soon put into limited production.

The Fiat 600 Jolly models were fitted with wicker seats, cut-out doors, and the option of a fringed surrey top to provide shade from the Meditteranean sun.

The open cockpit area made them suitable for fair weather use and a price tag nearly double that of a standard '600' guaranteed its exclusivity. Production was limited and it is believed that approximately 600 examples exist in modern times. Between 1958 and 1962, 32 examples of the Jolly were used as taxis on the island of Catalina off the coast of Los Angeles in the United States.

Most of the Jollys were built on the 500 chassis.
