The Plymouth Fury was produced from 1956 to 1978. From 1966 through 1969, a luxury version of the Fury, called the Plymouth VIP, was produced in response to the Ford LTD, Chevrolet Caprice, and the Ambassador DPL. The VIP came with a host of luxury items including wheel covers, vinyl tops, luxuriously upholstered interiors with walnut dashboard, and door-panel trim. Also included was a thicker grade of carpeting, more sound insulation, and full courtesy lighting. Other standard features included automatic transmission, power seats, power windows, and air conditioning.

The 1968 Plymouth VIP was part of the company's full-size line of vehicle available as a hardtop sedan, coupe, or station wagon. The VIP models came with deluxe cloth and vinyl interiors with front center armrest, rear pillar courtesy lamps and nylon carpeting. Deluxe 14-inch wheel covers, 8.25 x 14 tires, and an overhead valve V8 displacing 318 cubic-inches.
