2004 Toyota Volta Concept Navigation
A hybrid became a supercar to promote a new approach to designing an eco-friendly car of the future. The study was dedicated to Alessandro Volta, the talented Italian physicist who invented the battery.
The Toyota Alessandro Volta displayed features of mid-engined models of the past such as the BMW Nazca, Alfa Romeo Schighera and the Volkswagen W12 to demonstrate the fact that if a racing shape is able to accommodate an innovative and 'clean' propulsion system, the scope for conceiving and designing the low environmental impact saloons and compact cars of the future is enormous.
The Volta was powered by a derivative of the hybrid system of the Lexus RX 400 with a 3.3 litre V6 engine positioned on the back of the rear axle, not connected directly to the wheels. The drive was guaranteed by two electric motors, one per axle, for a 4×4 drive and greater safety.Source - Italdesign
