1990 Mazda Miata

The rear-driven Mazda Miata made its debut at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show. The production version arrived as an early 1990 model, and sales were immediately strong. Only 20,000 examples were expected to go on sale during 1989, followed by an additional 40,000 in 1990. (Mazda sold 35,944 Miatas in the United States in 1990).

Powering the little two-door sports car was a dual-overhead-cam four-cylinder engine delivering 116 horsepower and 100 lbs.-ft of torque. It was mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, fully independent suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes.

The Miata came equipped with a driver's-side airbag and an easy-folding manual top. For an additional $1,100, a removable hardtop could be purchased. There were two option packages available, a limited-slip differential, compact-disc player, and a separate air conditioning system.
