1976 Porsche 911 Turbo Type 930 Carrera Navigation
The Porsche 911 sports car first appeared at the 1963 Frankfurt Show as the '901.' Shortly after production commenced in 1964, it became the '911' following Peugeot's complaints about the use of '0' model numbers. The new model used the preceding Type 356's rear-engine layout but switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell and replaced the 356's VW-based suspension for a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm setup. The single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat-six initially displaced 1,991cc and developed 130 horsepower. Over the years, the engine was progressively developed and enlarged, eventually growing to more than 3.0 liters, and with the assistance of a turbocharger, producing over 300 horsepower.

View info and historyThe Porsche 911 Turbo became available in the United States for the first time in 1976. Porsche had built a reputation for building cars that offered impressive handling and driving characteristics with 'adequate' amounts of power. With the introduction of the 911 Turbo came a dramatic increase in power and a new reputation. Porsche had previously experimented with turbocharging on their racing cars, most notably with the 917/30, and using the lessons learned on the track migrated the turbo technology to the road-going cars. Along with the increase in performance came a change to the vehicle's appearance, characterized by its unique 'whale tail' or 'tea tray' spoiler at the rear (already seen on the Carrera model), which helped to keep the large rear tires planted to the ground at high speeds. The interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911, with leather upholstery, air conditioning, and electric windows. It was both a refined and high-performance automobile that catered to a wide audience and eventually sold in the thousands, becoming the definitive sports car of its age. The internal name for the 911 Turbo was the Type 930, with a top speed slightly north of 155 mph, making it one of the fastest automobiles of its day. Zero-to-sixty mph took 4.9 seconds, and because of the 'turbo-lag' demanded 100 percent from its driver due to the tendency to oversteer. Despite having a reputation for being unforgiving in the hands of inexperienced drivers, the 911 Turbo proved to be a huge success in both the European and North American markets. The factory's racing efforts in Group 4 required 400 road car examples built to satisfy homologation requirements, birthing the 'Project 930' 911 Turbo. In production from April 1975, the Turbo came equipped with a KKK turbocharger installed on the 3.0-liter RSR engine. In road-going guise, it developed 260 horsepower and was backed by a four-speed gearbox.
CoupeFor 1978, the engine grew to 3.3 liters and gained an intercooler. It was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day and had a top speed of 257 km/h. Initially sold as a closed coupe, the Turbo became available for the first time in both cabriolet and Targa forms in 1988.In 1990, the original 911 was replaced by the new type 964, and production of the Type 930 ceased in September 1989. There would not be another 911 Turbo until the Type 964 version launched in September of 1990. Introduced at the 1974 Paris Auto Show, production had begun at the end of September of 1975 with early deliveries taking place later that winter. Prior to the start of actual 911 Turbo production, four pre-production cars were prepared (chassis numbers 930680011, -0012, -0013, and -0014), performing several duties including posing or photographs and marketing purposes. Chassis number 0011 and 0012 were sent to Porsche importer Volkswagen of America, in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, for U.S.-homologation testing and publicity purposes. The other two cars, chassis number 0013 and 0014 remained at the factory for internal testing purposes.
CoupeBetween 1975 and 1977, Porsche produced a total of 1,625 EU-examples of the 3.0-liter Turbo. 590 examples were built during the 1976 production year. Due to the increasing emission regulations in the United States, the Turbo was not imported to the United States market between 1979 and 1985. It returned in 1985 with an upgraded Motronic engine management system and the aforementioned Targa and Cabriolet body styles.
