1999 Mercury Grand Marquis

The Mercury Grand Marquis was part of the lineup from 1975 to 2011. The 1999 model year was part of the Third Generation built from 1998 through 2002. It continued to use the Panther chassis from its predecessors, lengthened in wheelbase to 114.7-inches. The prior three-link rear axle suspension was replaced by a four-link axle with a Watt's linkage, though a solid rear axle was retained. Disc brakes were placed at all four corners and given dual-piston calipers for the front rotors, requiring the installation of 16-inch wheels.

The powertrain was the same as the 1996-1997 Grand Marquis - a 4.6-liter Modular V-8 backed by a four-speed 4R70W automatic transmission. Ford engineers did make several minor revisions including attaching the power steering reservoir onto the engine and the coolant overflow reservoir was moted onto the radiator. The engine was converted to coil-on-plug ignition along with fail-safe cooling with a dual-speed electric fan.

Standard equipment on the 1999 Grand Marquis included a stainless steel exhaust system, a brake/shift interlock, rear-seat child safety latches, a rear window defroster, woodgrain instrument panel appliques, side window demisters, dual remote-control fold-away power exterior mirrors with color-keyed finish, power door locks, and a day/night inside rearview mirror. Other standard features included an electronic AM/FM stereo with cassette and door-mounted speakers, a cloth trimmed split-bench front seat with center fold-down armrest and reclining seatbacks, speed control, speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering, a tilt steering column, and cloth-covered sun visors with retention clips. The P225/60R16 white sidewall Michelin tires were wrapped around 16-inch steel wheel rims with locking GS chrome wheel covers.

The sedan was the sole body style offered in both GS and LS trim levels. The GS had a base price of $22,825 while the LS sold for $24,725. The total production reached 122,582 for 1999. Optional equipment included a Premium Sound System, Handling and Performance Package, LTD feature car package, and the Ultimate Package.

The front-runner of the Mercury lineup, the Grand Marquis was a full-size rear-wheel drive sedan that was considered to be a fancier twin of the Ford Crown Victoria. Though not as athletic as more up-to-date models, the Grand Marquis represented old-school automotive design with bulky, yet heavy body-on-frame construction, softly tuned suspension calibrations and a solid rear axle. Enthusiasts prized....
