1991 Mazda Miata

The 1991 Mazda Miata was a 2-door roadster that had a base price of $14,200. Introduced in early 1990, the car was patterned after the 1960s Lotus Elan and was conceived in the United States at Mazda's design headquarters in California, though it was built and developed in Japan. It made an appearance at the Chicago Auto Show in February of 1989 and was well received.

The engine was fitted with hydraulic valve-lash adjusters and a stainless-tuned exhaust header. It could carry the car from zero-to-sixty mph in just 8.6 seconds. The suspension was a fully independent setup with dual wishbones, coil springs, and an anti-roll bar. Disc brakes were at all corners, and standard equipment included a driver's-side airbag and an easy-folding manual top. Mazda offered an optional removable hardtop for an additional $1,100.
