1999 CHEVY ASTRO, AN INDUSTRY EXCLUSIVE, OFFERS NEW 4-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM

For the second straight year, Chevy Astro rear-wheel-drive midsize van remains one of the few choices for buyers who need more room and capability than typical front-wheel-drive minivans, but don't want the bulk of a full-size van.

'Astro provides one of the few alternatives to van buyers,' says John Gaydash, Astro brand manager. 'No minivan can match it for cargo capacity, trailering capability and comfortable seating for eight adults.'

Astro is able to fit a diverse group of customers' needs because of its versatility. It is available in either passenger or cargo versions, and in rear-wheel-drive or All-Wheel-Drive configurations.

1999 Astros feature a number of refinements.

For example, a new 'state of the art' All-Wheel-Drive active transfer case replaces the previous All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system. Astro will operate in two-wheel drive until the system senses rear wheel slippage. It then immediately transfers torque between the front and rear axle to help regain traction and optimize control.

The standard 4L60-E four-speed automatic overdrive transmission has been enhanced for '99. It now provides better sealing with new pump cover seals. In addition, a new clutch plate material is designed to improve clutch durability and performance.

This transmission is matched with the powerful Vortec 4300 V6 SFI engine (190 horsepower @ 4400 rpm, 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm) to provide best in class trailering -- up to 5,500 lbs. when properly equipped. Ford and Chrysler minivans top out at 3,500 lbs.

Astro's interior is designed for versatility, comfort and convenience. New for ‘99, an available roof console with a trip computer provides instantaneous and average fuel economy, trip range, fuel used and elapsed time -- perfect for tracking mileage on family vacations. The console is standard with LS and LT trim levels. The LT trim level also includes eight-passenger seating, six-way power driver seat, power mirrors, Remote Keyless Entry and more.

Also new for ‘99 are available dealer-installed running boards, a handsome and functional styling touch for Astro aficionados.

Seven- or eight-passenger seating is available, depending on the model and seating arrangement selected. Astro provides up to 170.4 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seats removed
