1986 Audi 4000CS Quattro

The introduction of Group B competition in 1982 paved the way for a new category of international rally. While previous regulations limited manufacturers to either rear-wheel-drive or front-wheel-drive production cars, Group B had few restrictions, allowing for a plethora of technical, mechanical, and material advancements. Seizing the opportunity, Audi became the first to adopt a full-time all-wheel-drive system that allowed drivers to vary the amount of power sent to each end of the car while at speed. This proved very beneficial and a tremendous advantage for the numerous surfaces over which the events were run. The Audi 80 'quattro' long-wheelbase coupe, known today as the Ur-quattro, was the first to receive the new AWD system. In this guise, it rallied for several successful years before the World Constructor's title was snatched away by the Lancia 037, sending Audi engineers back to the drawing board. With assistance from Ferdinand Piech, the team clandestinely worked on a new purpose-built competition car for the 1984 season, the S1 Sport quattro. To homologate the new car for competition, 200 street-legal examples were required to be built. Audi would ultimately build 214 Sport quattros with 161 being the road versions.

The new Sport quattro was an evolution of the Audi 80 'quattro', retaining some of its predecessor's monocoque cabin and shaving 32 centimeters from the middle of the wheelbase and body shell. The windscreen was more upright than the Audi 80 which reduced reflection from the dashboard and improved outward visibility. It made better use of lightweight materials including aluminum, caron-fiber-reinforced Kevlar, and a fiberglass hood which reduce weight by nearly 180 kilograms. The Sport quattro was skinnier and the body had larger fender flares to accommodate 9-inch-wide Ronal spoked alloy wheels.

Power was from an all-aluminum alloy inline-five-cylinder engine with a single overhead camshaft and dry-sump lubrication. Engine displacement decreased slightly to 2,133 cc., but with the addition of a larger KKK K-27 turbocharger produced equivalent power to a normally aspirated three-liter unit. With the help of a Pierburg-Bosch mechanical fuel injection system, intercooling, and new cross-flow four-valve cylinder head, the engine delivered 306 brake horsepower and 258 foot-pounds of torque in road-going guise. The engine was backed by a five-speed transmission that sent power to all four wheels via a fully adjustable all-wheel-drive system. The variable ABS-modulated four-wheel disc brakes were courtesy of Porsche's racing program, providing impressive stopping power.

Stig Blomqvist captured both the World Manufacturers' and Drivers' Championships in 1984 for Audi in the Sport quattro. Michelle Mouton won the 1985 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in record time. Throughout the early 1980s until the end of the Group B era, Quattro variants won 23 WRC rallies including two world championships and twice championship runners up. The list of legendary drivers includes Michèle Mouton, Hannu Mikkola, Walter Rӧrhl and Stig Blomqvist.

Among enthusiasts, the Audi Quattros are often referred by their engine codes, to help differentiate between the earlier and later versions. The 10-valve, inline-5 cylinder engine used the 'WR' engine. The 'MB' was in reference to the 2,226cc 10v version, and the later 20v being the 'RR' engine.

Total Quattro car production from 1980 through 1981 reached 11,452 examples.

The popularity of the Quattro Coupe led to the introduction of a new 4000S Quattro sports sedan in 1984 - a 4WD version of the 4000S. Amenities included air conditioning, tinted glass, dual heated power mirrors, power driver's seat height adjustment, a front air dam, AM/FM stereo with cassette player, leather sport steering wheel, and a decklid spoiler. In 1986 it became known as the Audi 4000CS Quattro sedan had a base price of $17,800. Power was from an overhead-cam five-cylinder engine backed by a fully-synchronized five-speed manual transmission or three-speed automatic. The Quattro Coupe was dropped this year but the sale of the standard coupe continued, having a price of $15,560.
