2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR

2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (997)

A Porsche 911 at Le Mans has been a regular sight for the better part of forty-five years. The 911 GT3 RSR (Type 997) represents Porsche's most recent evolution of the famous GT race car.

Making its premier at the 'Night of Champions'; Porsche's newest revision of its champion-making 911 features a number of modifications nose-to-tail. A majority of those modifications could be found at two of the most important areas of the car's body, its nose and its tail.

To start with, the newest development of the GT3 RSR addresses the car's understeering tendencies. One of the features employed on the newest evolution includes a very noticeable lip on its nose. This lip helps to squeeze and speed up the airflow passing under the car, which creates a suctioning effect that pulls the car down to the track. To help create as much downforce as possible, the underfloor at the front underwent aerodynamic testing and revision. In addition to the lip on the nose of the car, the new 911 GT3 RSR also utilizes wider front tires. The extra rubber provides greater grip at the front of the car.

The nose of the car still retains points on the lower portion of the nose to attach small wing elements, or diveplanes, to further optimize downforce and handling. The low and very aerodynamic nose also retains the filling point for the 90-liter fuel tank and incorporates a fast-filling function.

Of course, the new 911 GT3 RSR still sports as wide a stance possible. Though the street 911 is very noticeable within the bodywork, the widely flared fenders and wide stance of the tires quickly reminds the on-looker of the car's racing heritage and purpose.

The other important focus area of the new GT3 RSR was obviously the rear of the car. The adjustable rear wing has been updated. The twin-pillar supports were redesigned with slots to aid in airflow. In addition, the pillars have been neatly incorporated into the rear fairing.

To aid in air ducting, the rear lid was redesigned in such a way as to capture the air, but also, to provide little disruption at the rear of the car so to maintain stability at the rear of the car. Also, like the 911 GT3 Cup and GT3 R, the new GT3 RSR uses LED lighting for the car's brake lights.

While the monocoque body itself has gone through a number of updates and revisions, many other important changes took place under the car's body. An important area of change under the car's body was the engine. The 4.0-liter, six-cylinder engine delivers 455 hp, which is a five horsepower increase over the last generation GT3 RSR. The increase in power resulted, mostly, from an updated engine management system. While power has increased, the maximum revs have not. The limit remains at 9,400 rpm.

The car's new fuel management system, in conjunction with the fuel tank, has been revised to better adapt to different fuel grades. This, and the updated exhaust and air intake, all combine to provide the car's increase in power. The exhausts were refined and exit neatly out the center-point of the chassis' rear end.

Bolted to the updated engine is Porsche's six-speed gearbox with its sequential jaw-type shift. The transmission's clutch is a three-plate carbon-fiber with a single-mass flywheel. The rear-wheel driven GT3 RSR also features a traction control system adjustable from the cockpit.

Speaking of the cockpit, a Motec multi-function display provides the drivers an assortment of display options, including an on-screen gearshift indicator. The driver is safely belted in with a six-point harness that has been adapted for use with the HANS device.

All told, the 2011 911 GT3 RSR remains very similar in its design to its previous models. However, a number of small changes have been made to make a big difference to the famous endurance racer. The newest revision looks to keep the 911 spirit alive and well in sports car endurance racing.

Debut for the 2011 version of the world's most successful GT race car

The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR takes off into the new motorsport season with extensive modifications. The 2011 version of the world's most successful GT race car celebrated its international premiere at the 'Night of Champions' party held at the R&D Centre in Weissach to mark the end of the motorsport season. Priority in the further development of the GT3 RSR was given to the newly designed aerodynamics at the front and rear, changes to the suspension kinematics and to the engine.

The 4.0-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine now delivers 455 hp (335 kW) at 7,800 revs, five horsepower more than its predecessor. The power increase results from an engine management system which adapts even better to different fuel grades, as well as a redesigned exhaust system and a modified air intake housing. Moreover, the driveability of the famously efficient engine has undergone further improvements. Maximum revs remain unchanged at 9,400 rpm.

Clearly visible are the modifications to the front. A new front lip provides higher downforce at the front axle. The front wheels are now wider with the rims growing from 11 to 12 inches giving additional grip and less of an understeering tendency. The position of the rear wing and the shape of the wing mounting also underwent optimisation and were adapted to the new rear fairing with additional air outlet louvers. The rear lid was also redesigned for optimised air ducting. Like the 911 GT3 Cup and the GT3 R, the RSR has now been equipped with the LED rear lights taken from the latest 911 road-legal cars.

2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RSRThe 911 GT3 RSR joins the 911 GT3 R and the 911 GT3 Cup as the top model of Porsche Motorsport's product range. The successful long distance racer from Weissach can be ordered now at a price of 410,000 Euro plus country-specific value added tax. All 2011 modifications are available as a kit for GT3 RSR cars from the 2010 season.

2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (997)

Unveiled to the world in 1999, the Porsche 911 GT3 was a high performance variant of the original water-cooled version of the Porsche 911, the 996. It continued the 25 year tradition of low-weight RS models that was ended with the 993 RS. The name GT3 was taken from the Fiat GT class that it had been designed for, and it didnt use the simple engine of the standard production versions of the 996,....
