The big news for the United States in 1997 was the addition of a four-door version of the performance M3. The 3 Series continued to be a very versatile vehicle, offered as a sedan, coupe, and convertible with several different engine and transmission options. Pricing ranged from $21,390 to just under $40,000. There were a total of 3,405 M3 Coupes produced in 1997, and 4,535 sedan versions. The base engine was a six-cylinder, dual overhead cam 16-valve unit that displaced 116 cubic-inches and produced 138 horsepower. The 328 had a 24-valve engine that displaced 170 cubic-inches and produced 190 horsepower. The M3 displaced 192 cubic-inches and produced an impressive 240 horsepower.
