Racing genes: the BMW M3 DTM

When BMW returns to the DTM next season, it will also mark the comeback of a racing legend: between 1987 and 1992 the BMW M3 celebrated no less than 40 wins and over 150 podium finishes in this series.

The BMW M3 DTM is based on the fourth generation of the most sporty production car to emerge from BMW M. BMW Motorsport has been developing the DTM version of the car since autumn last year, when the Board of Management of BMW AG announced the company's return to the DTM.

The DTM regulations for the 2012 season stipulate all cars must use a certain number of standard components. This is to guarantee that development costs remain reasonable and are considerably lower than in other top motorsport categories. Despite this, the BMW Motorsport engineers have been able to call upon the immense technical resources of the BMW Group and apply their innovation to establish performance advantages over their rivals in areas such as engine and aerodynamics.

The result of this work is a spectacular racing car, which is set to thrill DTM fans. The powerful V8 engine equipped with the air restrictor as detailed in the technical regulations generates approximately 480 bhp. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in about three seconds and boasts a top speed of approx. 300 km/h.

BMW M3 DTM Concept Car celebrates debut.

Just two weeks after the official roll-out of the new racing car for the 2012 DTM season, BMW presented the BMW M3 DTM Concept Car.

Dr. Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for development, and BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt unveiled the car on Friday evening in the Double Cone building at Munich's BMW Welt. As part of the DTM event in the Olympic Stadium, the BMW M3 DTM Concept Car will be on show to motorsport fans and visitors to BMW Welt at the weekend.

The car offers an initial impression of what the BMW M3 DTM will look like when it lines up at the start of the 2012 season. However, the vehicle was not the only star of the evening at BMW Welt: BMW Motorsport also presented the first two drivers to be confirmed as wearing the company colours in the DTM as of next season – Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus. Furthermore, the first partners of BMW Motorsport for 2012 were introduced.

'It is good to see how our DTM project is picking up speed,' said Dr. Draeger. 'Next year, BMW returns to the DTM after two decades. We will be facing our main competitors in the premium sector – and are already looking forward to this challenge. The DTM comeback sees BMW return to its roots. We have enjoyed great success in production car racing in the past, and I am convinced we will follow on in 2012 where we left off. Everyone at BMW Motorsport is working hard to ensure we get off to a successful start next season.'

Marquardt added: 'Getting a new racing programme up and running is a bit like doing a jigsaw. New pieces are added almost every day, and we must put them together to create the big picture. The BMW M3 DTM Concept Car is an important milestone on our route to the start of the 2012 season. The roll-out of the car was successful, and we are now starting our test programme out on the track. Drivers Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus are also involved and will form part of our driving line-up in 2012. Their impressive performances in touring car and GT racing make them ideally suited to the DTM, and we are sure they will leave their mark on this series too. It is obviously just as important to have strong partners on board, and we were able to present some of them today. The pieces are fitting together perfectly, so we can definitely say: our preparations for the 2012 season are going according to plan.'

Interview with Jens Marquardt

2011 BMW M3 DTM Concept
In this interview, BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt reports on the status of preparations for the return to the DTM, the background to the choice of drivers, and the rest of this year's BMW Motorsport racing programme.2011 BMW M3 DTM Concept
Mr. Marquardt, the BMW M3 DTM Concept Car is celebrating its debut in Munich. Is this a special moment for you?

Jens Marquardt: 'Yes, of course. Everyone in the team has been utterly devoted to the intensive development of the BMW M3 DTM for months. It is a special moment when you unveil the car to the public for the first time. How will people react? Do the BMW fans like the new car? Obviously the visual appearance of the car will change considerably before the first race in 2012. The BMW M3 DTM Concept Car allows us to give an insight into the status of our development work. The fact that we are able to do this at the DTM event in Munich – the home of BMW – makes it doubly interesting.'

The car completed its roll-out and the first tests. Were the results satisfactory?

Marquardt: 'Yes, we are very happy. However, it is still to early to draw conclusions regarding the subsequent performance of the car in race conditions. It was important for us to get the first prototype of the BMW M3 DTM out onto the track so we could start our testing programme. That worked very well. Over the next few weeks we will build more cars, so that each of our three teams can start working on the car.'

Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus have been confirmed as drivers. Is this a logical choice?

Marquardt: 'To a certain degree, yes. Andy and Augusto have proven on more than one occasion in the past that they are among the very best when it comes to production car racing. We know the DTM places very unique demands on the drivers. However, Andy and Augusto have all the attributes needed to find their feet quickly in this series. They are permanent fixtures in our team and have known the engineers for years. That will make the test work easier.'

Who will drive the other BMW M3 DTM cars in 2012?

Marquardt: 'We will be working on completing the driving line-up for the DTM comeback over the coming weeks and months. At the moment it is impossible to say when all the drives will be confirmed. At first we will obviously look to the drivers in our own ranks, but we will also be watching some possible candidates who do not currently drive for BMW. Whatever happens, we will line up with strong drivers in 2012.'

Outside of the DTM, what is next for BMW Motorsport this year?

Marquardt: 'The DTM preparation obviously takes up a lot of time. Despite this, we are going all out to ensure that this year's GT programme remains successful. BMW Team RLL is in a good position in the fight for the GT title in the American Le Mans Series. In the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, BMW Motorsport is also well placed to challenge for the team and manufacturers' titles. As you can see, although the 24-hour races in Le Mans and at the Nürburgring, both of which we finished on the podium, are over, there is no chance of us getting bored.'

BMW M3 DTM Concept Car debuts in Munich.

The 2012 motorsport season is looming: As part of the DTM event at Munich's Olympic Stadium on 16th and 17th July 2011, BMW will present a BMW M3 DTM Concept Car for the first time.

The Concept Car will give the first impression of what next year's car will look like. This was announced by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt, who takes over from Mario Theissen on 1st July, at Tuesday's pre-event DTM press conference in Munich. The presentation will take place in front of media representatives on Friday 15th July, where they will also gain some further insights about the DTM programme of BMW. The car will then be on show to the public at BMW Welt over the remainder of the weekend.

'The fact that the DTM is staging an event in Munich this year is obviously exciting and interesting for us too,' said Marquardt. 'The location right on our doorstep gives the term 'home event' a whole new meaning in motorsport in the future. Although we will not be competing in 2011, we want to use this opportunity to give DTM fans and BMW Motorsport followers a taste of what they can look forward to next season. For this reason, this event is the logical venue to unveil a BMW M3 DTM Concept Car. Únder the motto 'BMW welcomes DTM' we will welcome the series to Munich and follow the event at the Olympic Stadium closely. We hope the spectators will also enjoy the many classic BMW cars in action as part of the support programme. Whether the 1987 BMW M3 DTM, the BMW M1 Procar from 1981, or the Mini Rally Monte Carlo car from the 1960s: we think there will be something to suit every taste.'

2011 BMW M3 DTM Concept
BMW Welt will be dominated by motorsport throughout the entire DTM race weekend at Munich's Olympic Stadium. The main attraction will be the BMW M3 DTM Concept Car. In addition, BMW is also exhibiting some of the historic cars, including the 1979 BMW M1 Art Car designed by Andy Warhol, the 1986 BMW 635 CSi and the BMW M3 GTR from 2001. The BMW M3 from the late 1980s, which notched up countless victories and two of the three DTM titles for the brand, will also be on display. With more than 1,500 individual wins to its name, this car is still regarded as one of the most successful touring cars of all time.

Development of the BMW M3 DTM for the coming season has been in full flow since BMW announced its DTM comeback in October last year, and has so far run to plan. The first tests will be performed shortly. BMW will be represented with three strong teams in the DTM in 2012. BMW Team Schnitzer, in action with the BMW M3 GT at the Nürburgring 24 Hours (DE) this weekend, will run two BMW M3 DTM cars, as will BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG.
