Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Names Mitsubishi Motors Outlander and Outlander Sport as Recommended Used Vehicles for Teens

IIHS applies more stringent criteria to its list of recommendations which includes varying model-years of both Outlander and Outlander Sport

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) earned recognition from IIHS for its safe and affordable used car offerings on the Outlander and Outlander Sport – making both models an ideal driving solution for teenagers. IIHS is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses — deaths, injuries and property damage — from motor vehicle crashes. The Institute is wholly supported by auto insurers. To qualify for the 'best choices' list of vehicles starting under $20,000 or 'good choices' list of vehicles starting under $10,000, a few basic principles apply. A vehicle must include a base engine to avoid temptations associated with high horsepower, be bigger and heavier in size, and come standard with electronic stability control to help a driver maintain control on curves and slippery roads.

Used Outlander models (2014 and newer) beginning at $10,700, and Outlander Sport models (2011 and newer) starting at $6,900 earn a spot on the 'best choices' list in the small SUV category.1 By being selected for this list, IIHS confirms both models earned good ratings in the IIHS moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and good or acceptable ratings in the small overlap front test. Outlander models produced between 2007 and 2013 land in small SUV category on IIHS' 'good choices' list where pricing is estimated at $3,900. Vehicles categorized as a 'good choice' recommendation earned good ratings in the IIHS moderate overlap front, side and restraint tests.

If rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration (NHTSA,) vehicles on either list must earn 4 or 5 stars overall or 4 or 5 stars in the front and side tests under the old rating scheme. All come with standard ESC.

'Mitsubishi Motors prides itself on consistently delivering top safety features at an affordable price to ensure our customers receive the best possible value,' said Don Swearingen, executive vice president and chief operating officer, MMNA. 'As top sellers and leaders in reliability for the brand, the Outlander and Outlander Sport offer sound reassurance for parents searching for a car for their teen that is both safety conscious and engineered with precision.'

1Prices, provided by Kelley Blue Book and rounded to the nearest $100, are from March 1, 2017, for the lowest trim level and earliest applicable model year. The estimates are based on the following criteria: vehicle in good condition, typical mileage and private party purchase in Arlington, Va.
