1975 Mazda Chantez

History

The Mazda Chantez was produced from 1972 through 1976. It was a two-door sedan powered by a 2-stroke 'AA' engine that offered 35 PS and a top speed in the neighborhood of 70 mph. A single-rotor Wankel powerplant was planned for the car, but other manufacturers were able to block Mazda's plan, and soon the company lost interest in the Kei class and halted sales, just as new Kei car regulations were being introduced. The Chantez would be Mazda's last Kei car until 1989.

The Kei class is a Japanese category pertaining to small vehicle production. They originated after the Second World War as a means to promote the growth of the car industry.
