2014 Chevrolet Volt

2014 Chevrolet Volt 2014 Chevrolet Volt When it arrived on the market for 2011, the game-changing Chevrolet Volt was the industry's first extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). Unlike any other EV or hybrid, its electric drive motor was powered by a battery until that was depleted, then by a gas engine-driven generator.

Because it ran on inexpensive electricity off the grid for the first 35-40 miles, then as far as needed on engine-generated electric power, it was a non-fuel-burning, emissions-free EV for the first part of each day's drive, then a fuel-efficient compact hatchback with no EV 'range anxiety'....that sweaty-palm fear of running out of volts before you run out of trip.

'I think we're at an inflection point in history of our industry,' said then GM Production Development Vice Chairman Tom Stephens (who succeeded the retiring Bob Lutz) at the Volt's media launch. 'The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle that is capable of being your only car,' added then Marketing Director Tony Disalle. 'You have the freedom to 'fuel up' at home, yet you're not tethered to a charge station.'

Based on Chevy's compact Cruze sedan but with a different high-tech interior and a less roomy rear seat due to the centrally located, T-shaped battery pack, the Volt is a nice car and surprisingly fun to drive. Its only major downside is its high ('40,000) price due to its expensive 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, complex powertrain and sophisticated controls.

2014 Chevrolet Volt Now Offers Even Greater Value

Pricing for the 2014 model will start at $34,995

The Chevrolet Volt, already recognized for having the most satisfied owners will soon come with another people pleaser: a lower price. The 2014 model will start at $34,995, including an $810 destination fee (excluding tax, title, license and dealer fees).

If consumers include federal tax credits ranging from $0-$7,500 (depending on individual tax liability), pricing could start at $27,495. Individual tax situations differ, so consult a tax professional prior to claiming any credits to confirm eligibility for vehicle tax benefits.

2014 Chevrolet Volt'The lower price and cost savings from driving on electricity provide Volt owners an unmatched balance of technology, capability and cost of ownership,' said Don Johnson, Ú.S. vice president, Chevrolet sales and service. 'The 2014 Volt will offer the same impressive list of features, but for $5,000 less.

'We have made great strides in reducing costs as we gain experience with electric vehicles and their components,' Johnson §äid. 'In fact, the Volt has seen an increase in battery range and the addition of creature comforts, such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and MyLink, since its launch in 2010.'

Volt owners who charge regularly typically drive 900 miles between fill-ups and visit the gas station about once a month. The 2014 Volt will continue to provide owners with impressive fuel economy of 98 MPGe (electric) and 35 city/40 highway on gasoline power without any need to change their daily driving habits while saving $900 in annual fuel costs. Today's Volt owners have logged 364 million miles, including 225 million electric miles.

The Volt's lower price also changes the comparative set of vehicles on popular auto information sites like kbb.com, Edmunds.com and cars.com, where visitors to these sites can search for a new vehicle by type and/or prices. The Volt's lower price will broaden its exposure to price-sensitive prospective buyers using these sites to search for a plug-in electric vehicle or a gas-powered alternative sedan. (concept carz)

The Volt continues to be the best selling plug-in vehicle in America and is attracting new buyers to the Chevrolet brand. More than 70 percent of Volt buyers are new to General Motors. Not surprisingly, the Toyota Prius is the most frequently traded-in vehicle for a Volt.

California continues to be Volt's largest market. The 2014 Volt will continue to offer a low emissions package that earns the Volt a coveted 'sticker' for single-occupancy HOV lane access in California and New York.

The Chevrolet Volt allows gas-free driving for an EPA-estimated 38 miles (61 km), depending on terrain, driving techniques and temperature. The range-extending engine gives the Volt up to 380 total miles (615 km) of total driving range. The 2014 Volt will start to be available in dealer showrooms late this summer. Chevrolet will introduce two new colors – Ashen Gray Metallic and Brownstowne Metallic for the 2014 model year – and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Volt owners exceeding EPA electric-driving estimate

150 million combined electric miles equivalent of trip from Earth to Mars

Chevrolet Volt owners are consistently achieving the published EPA-estimated mileage of 98 MPGe gasoline-free miles, and many are even exceeding it. Their experience contributes to an out worldly total of 150 million electric-powered Volt driving miles – roughly the distance from Earth to Mars.

The typical Volt owner who regularly charges the vehicle is going 900 miles between fill-ups of the gasoline engine that powers the Volt's on-board generator. That avoids about $1,300 a year at the pump.

2014 Chevrolet VoltMPGe is a measure of the average distance traveled per unit of energy consumed. The EPA uses it to compare the consumption of alternative fuel vehicles, plug-in electric vehicles and other advanced technology vehicles with the fuel economy of conventional internal combustion vehicles expressed as miles per Ú.S. gallon of gasoline.

Some drivers are all but avoiding gasoline.

'I have driven more than 23,500 miles in my Volt in 21 months, and have been to a gas station twice,' said Brent Waldrep of Auburn Hills, Mich. 'The last time, was in August (2012), and I still have about 65 percent of that tank left. I go about 9,000-10,000 miles between fill ups.'

Waldrep is atypical, but he is not alone.

'It's been more than 5,000 miles and I've only filled up once not including the dealer fill,' said Larry Read of Canyon Lake, Texas.

Paul Friday of San Jose, Calif., says he gets about 7,000 miles between fill-ups and adds about three gallons of gas to his Volt every three months.

'We've seen and heard from our Volt owners that they are achieving fantastic performance numbers with their vehicle as many are beating the EPA label estimates,' said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet Volt marketing director. 'Our Volt owners are showing the performance potential of driving electric, and having fun doing it.'

2014 Chevrolet Volt
Volt owners remain the most satisfied of any in the entire industry for the past two years with more than nine in 10 telling a major consumer publication they would buy another Volt.

For the first 38 miles, the Volt can drive gas and tailpipe-emissions free using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16.50-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt's battery runs low, a gas-powered generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range up to another 344 miles on a full tank.

Chevrolet Volt Owners Surpass 100 Million Electric Miles

5 million gallons of fuel saved; $1,300 a year in fuel costs avoided

Chevrolet Volt owners collectively have driven more than 100 million all-electric miles since the vehicle went on sale two years ago this month. The average Volt owner travels more than 65 percent of the time in pure electric mode as the car was designed – only using the gasoline-powered generator for longer trips.

By charging regularly, Volt owners drive approximately 900 miles, or a month and a half, between fill-ups. However, many Volt owners quickly exceed that average, based on an EPA-estimated 98 MPGe that puts electric-only range at 35 mpg city and 40 mpg on the highway. Andrew Byrne from Los Angeles is one of these drivers.

2014 Chevrolet Volt'Since my daily driving is all electric, I only really need to buy gas for long road trips,' Byrne §äid. 'I drove over 1,900 miles on my last tank of gas.'

With each avoided trip to the gas station, Volt drivers continue to increase their return on investment. Based on EPA estimates and compared to the average new vehicle sold in the Únited States, Volt owners are saving about $1,370 a year in fuel costs.

'The best sign of a great product is when your customers are the most satisfied in the industry,' said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet Volt marketing director. 'Volt owners have found the Volt is not only fun to drive, but provides technology and performance where consumers need it most.'

This is the second year in a row the Volt has topped the satisfaction survey of one of the leading consumer testing organizations in the Únited States.

'My commute is 55 miles round trip, but with the Volt I use 80 percent less gas and save over $150 each month,' said Farris Khan from southeastern Michigan. 'Plus the Volt is really fun to drive because of its instant torque; driving anything else feels like yester-tech!'

For the typical driver, the average Volt savings equates to:
◾Nine weeks of groceries at $151 per week
◾228 car washes at $6 per car wash
◾137 movie tickets at $10 per ticket

The 5 million gallons of gas saved is equivalent to $21 million in gasoline costs averted overall based on $4 per gallon of premium, or more than two supertankers of gas.
