1988 Porsche 928

Production of the Porsche 928 lasted from 1977 through 1995 and was the company's first production V8 powered model. Design studies began in 1971, eventually evolving into the 928. While the 356 was an evolution of the Volkswagen Beetle, and the 911 was an evolution of the 356, the 928 was the company's first clean-sheet design. Additionally, the 924 was an abandoned project by Volkswagen and Audi.

The front-mounted, water-cooled V8 engine had a single overhead camshaft design, 4.5-liter displacement, and produced 219 horsepower for the North American market and 237 hp in other markets. In 1980, the U.S.-destined models were changed from mechanical to electronic fuel injection, with no change in power. Transmission options included a five-speed dog leg manual or a Mercedes-Benz-derived automatic, originally with three speeds and gaining a fourth from 1983 in North America and 1984 in other markets.

The styling was courtesy of Wolfgang Möbius under the guidance of Anatole Lapine. The front fenders, front wing, and doors were built from aluminum with the rest being created from galvanized steel. The bumpers were from polyurethane elastic and integrated into the nose and tail and covered in body-colored plastic. The large hatchback area, the traditional engine location for Porsche vehicles, offered adequate luggage area and easy access. The 2+2 seating had rear seats that could be folded down, enlarging the luggage space. The rounded body design and pop-up headlamps helped reduce the vehicle's overall drag.

The 928 used a passive rear-wheel steering system called the 'Weissach Axle,' near 50/50 weight distribution, and an unsleeved, silicon alloy engine block made of aluminum.

For 1985, the 4.7-liter SOHC engine was replaced by a new 5.0-liter DOHC unit with four valves per cylinder and a horsepower rating of 288 hp. Along with new-style seats, these cars are sometimes referred to as S3 to distinguish them from the 16-valve 'S' models. The European versions, retaining the 4.7-liter engine, used a lower 9.3:1 compression.

Modifications to the suspension followed in 1986 along with larger brakes with four-piston calipers and a modified exhaust system. The 928 S4 variant was introduced in the second half of 1986 as a 1987 model, bringing with it an updated version of the 5.0-liter V8 engine for all markets now rated at 316 horsepower. It used a Bosch LH-Jetronic fuel injection system and came standard with a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. A five-speed manual was optional. A new single-disc clutch was used in manual transmission cars and a larger torque converter in automatic transmission cars. Only minor styling changes were made to S4 cars.

There were no visible changes to the 1988 model year 928 S4. Pricing began at nearly $59,000. A Club Sport version became available to continental Europe and the U.S. in 1988. It was similar to the lightweight factory prototypes built in 1987 for racecar drivers who were on their payroll at the time, including Derek Bell, Jochen Mass, Hans Stuck, Bob Wollek, and Jacky Ickx. These five white lightweight S4 models were manual transmission cars. The Club Sport was built in a similar vein to the prototypes, weighing approximately 220 pounds lighter than its production siblings and only offered with a manual transmission.

Between 1978 and 1995, Porsche produced 61,056 examples of the 928. 19 examples were 928 CS, produced in 1988 through mid-year 1989, and 42 were 928 SE models. The SE, sometimes referred to as the S4 Sport, was not as extreme as the race-oriented Club Sport, falling somewhere in between the S4 and the CS.
