The 1985 Dodge Charger was a 2-door, 5-passenger hatchback available as a base, 2.2, and Shelby trim levels. The base Charger was powered by a 1.6-liter engine offering 64 horsepower. It came standard with a four-speed manual transmission. The 2.2 version had a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine with an overhead cam and an aluminum head, offering nearly 100 horsepower. It came standard with a five-speed manual setup. A high-performance carbureted version of the 2.2-liter engine was available, bringing horsepower to 110 BHP. The 1985 Charger styling was similar to the prior year's model. Three body colors were new along with one interior trim color. Inside was a four-spoke sport steering wheel and Rallye full-gauge instrument cluster. New features included 13-inch wheel covers, and a shift indicator on manual gearbox models (except those with a turbocharger). The 2.2 Models had updated graphics, Rallye wheels, 'Charger 2.2' decals on the bodyside striping, fender extensions, side sill ground-effect spoilers, and a performance-look airdam.

The Shelby Charger was powered by a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine fitted with a Garrett AIResearch T3 turbocharger that delivered a boost up to 8.0 psi. It had a Chrysler/Bosch multi-point fuel injection system and was mated to a performance-geared close-ratio five-speed transmission with overdrive. In the front were gas-charged struts with shocks at the rear. They also had bigger drum brakes and speed-rated steel-belted radial tires. They had 'Turbo' lettering on the side of the hood's bulge as well as hood louvers. Inside, the Shelby's had a Rallye instrument cluster with a 7000 RPM tachometer and trip odometer. They had an AM/FM stereo radio which was an upgrade over the formerly AM setup.
