The 1999 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan had a price that ranged from $64,700 - $132,200. The Base S320 Sedan had a six-cylinder dual-overhead cam engine fitted with HFM Motronic fuel injection and offered nearly 220 horsepower. The S420 Sedan also had a V8 overhead-cam engine which displaced 256 CID and offered 275 horsepower. The S500 had a 315 horsepower engine while the S600 had a lightweight V8 that displaced 365.4 CID and offered nearly 400 horsepower. Rear wheel drive was standard with 4Matic four-wheel drive available for an additional cost.
