1978 Mercury Marquis

The 1978 Mercury Marquis were similar to the prior year's model. Body styles included a hardtop, narrow-pillar 4-door sedan, and a station wagon with optional third-row seating. Power was from a 5.8-liter, 2-barrel V8 mated to a SelectShift three-speed automatic. Optional 6.6- and 7.5-liter V8 engines were available. Standard equipment included power steering, power brakes, fold-down center armrest, HR78 x 15 SBR tires, and a bench seat in Althea cloth/vinyl trim.

In the front was a bright vertical grille flanked on either side by concealed headlamps. Located below the grille was a chrome grille with vertical front bumper guards with black inserts.

The Marquis had two additional trim levels including the Brougham and the Grand Marquis. The Brougham had a landau vinyl roof on two-door body styles and a full vinyl roof on the four-door sedan. Additional accouterments included bright surround moldings, power windows, fender skirts with bright molding, decklid lock cover with L-M crest, Brougham wheel covers, and full-length upper body peak molding.

The Grand Marquis trim level came standard with tinted glass, dual-beam dome and map light, Twin Comfort lounge seat in Media velour with dual center folding armrests, and a digital clock. They had a vinyl roof, hood and decklid paint stripes, fender skirts, and a gold marquis crest on the headlamp cover and the rear pillar. The Grand Marquis script could be found on the decklid.

Pricing for the base trim level began at $5,765 for the 2-door hardtop coupe, $6,380 for the 2-door Brougham, and $7,130 for the Grand Marquis 2-door. The most popular body style and trim level was the Grand Marquis 4-door Pillarless Hardtop which achieved 37,753 sales.
