The origins of the Toyota FJ25 was as a military vehicle, later designed for civilian use and part of Toyota's expansion into foreign markets in the 1950s. The BJ and FJ Series was produced from 1951 through 1955, and in 1954 technical director Hanji Umehara coined the name 'Land Cruiser' (although the name had already been used on the Studebaker Land Cruiser). The BJ and FJ rested on a 104.3-inch wheelbase platform and was powered by a 3.4-liter in the BJ and a 3.9-liter six-cylinder engine in the FJ.
