Mercedes-Benz introduced the 300S at the 1951 Paris Auto Show and was based on the Mercedes-Benz W186 300 Sedan. The 300 was the company's first all-new post-war automobile design and help re-establish Mercedes-Benz's pre-war reputation for high-performance luxury cars. Many of the components of the 300S were shared with the 300, although it had a shortened 114.2-inch wheelbase. Power was from a 3.0-liter OHC inline six cylinder unit offering 150 horsepower and 178 ft-lb of torque with three dual-throat Solex carburetors for the early S model. It had power-assisted brakes and an independent suspension system. Bodystyles included a two-seat coupe, roadster, and cabriolet with a total of 580 examples built including 216 coupes. The bodies were built entirely by hand with the work carried out by the most senior craftsmen at Mercedes' Sindelfingen body works. Celebrity ownership included Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, and Aga Khan.
