1976 AMC Hornet

The AMC Hornet was produced from 1970 through 1977. Bodystyles included a wagon, sedan, and hatchback coupe. Styling was based on the AMC Cavalier and Vixen show cars, as well as the Ford Maverick. It was, however, an all-new design and it shared no major body components with its AMC siblings, though it did use some of the Rambler American's drivetrain and chassis.

During its seven-year production lifespan, the Hornet remained mostly unchanged. For the 1976 model year, a total of 71,577 examples were built. The base engine was an overhead-valve six-cylinder unit displacing 232 cubic inches and delivering 90 (SAE) horsepower. This engine was also shared with the Pacer and Gremlin. Other optional engines included a 258 CID six, and a 304 CID OHV V8. A three-speed column shift was standard. Three option packages were available, including the 'X' package and 'D/L' package. The sporty appearance 'X' package included full-length rally striping, 'X' ornamentation on dash and lower back panel, and black grille accents. It was only offered on Sportabouts and hatchbacks, and came with slot wheels with D70x14 blackwall tires.

The 'D/L' package, when ordered on sedans, added luxury items such as 'Kasmir Knit' fabric and reclining front seats. The 'D/L' package on Sportabouts was fitted with 'Potomac Stripe fabric, wood-grain body paneling, air deflector, roof rack, and custom wheel covers.
