2000 Porsche 911 GT3R

The first Porsche to receive the 'R' designation in reference to its competition specification was done in 1967 to the 911. It was powered by the engine found in the 906 and extensive weight-saving modifications were made to prepare it for racing. Similar treatments were later applied to the Carrera RS of 1973 and 1974, and RSRs of 1973-1975 and later in the 1990s.

In 1998 Porsche retired the air-cooled flat-6-cylinder engine. The last of the air-cooled 911s (993) left Weissach and the assembly lines in Stuttgart. The 996 was the new 911, and its chassis was the GT car for the future of Porsche Motorsport. It was more than just a new designation, as every component of the 996 was new, including the bodywork, gearbox, engine, suspension, engine management, chassis, and cooling system. At the time of launch, the new GT3 R was made to the current ACO rules for the GT category in 1999.

Introduced in 1999, the Porsche 996 GT3 R was a factory-built racing version of its new 996 GT3. The GT3 was a street-legal, track-ready homologation model that was powered by a highly modified 3.6-liter, liquid-cooled, flat-six engine. In contrast to the Turbo and GT2, which gained their performance with turbocharging, the GT3 was a naturally aspirated engine. The race-bred GT3 had in excess of 400 horsepower, an 8,600 redline, a close-ratio GT2 six-speed gearbox with external cooling, and wider rear bodywork. The versions destined for competition were designated GT3 R, and were homologated for FIA GT and IMSA American LeMans Series (ALMS) competition.

Additional modifications to the GT3R included stripped interiors with full roll cages, racing seats, fuel cell, externally adjustable shock absorbers, spherical bearings at suspension mounting points, electric power steering, and fire-suppression systems. There was a 4-wheel independent racing suspension, 4-wheel ventilated hydraulic disc brakes (380mm), BBS three-piece racing wheels mounted on Yokohama racing slicks, pressurized lubrication, a limited-slip differential, Recaro driving seat, Sparco steering wheel and Willans racing belts. The carbon fiber bodywork, combining strength and weight-saving techniques, makes maximum use of current aerodynamic principles to provide excellent grip with minimum drag.

The list of drivers included Bob Wollek, Dirk Müller, Lucas Luhr, Sascha Maassen, Mark Neuhaus, Grady Willingham, Michael Brockman, Randy Wars, and the late Paul Newman. Dick Barbour Racing won 12 events in 2000 ALMS competition and the GT Championship.

Unveiled to the world in 1999, the Porsche 911 GT3 was a high performance variant of the original water-cooled version of the Porsche 911, the 996. It continued the 25 year tradition of low-weight RS models that was ended with the 993 RS. The name GT3 was taken from the Fiat GT class that it had been designed for, and it didnt use the simple engine of the standard production versions of the 996,....
