1927 Citroen Model C4

The French automobile manufacturer, Citroen, was founded by André-Gustave Citroën in 1919. Citroen had built armaments for France during World War I and when peacetime resumed, the decision was made to convert production to automobiles. Citroen had a background with automobile production, having worked with Mors for six-years, beginning in 1908. Engineer Louis Dufresne, who had previously worked with Panhard, was tasked with designing the new Citroen. He was joined by Jules Salmon in February of 1917 and helped turn Citroen's goal of building an inexpensive, well equipped, and durable automobile into reality.

The Type A was introduced to the press in March of 1919 and the first production example left the factory at the end of May 1919. The company continued to produce a succession of reliable, conventional automobiles both at its Paris factory and, from 1926, at Slough in England. The C4 Model was announced in September of 1928 and came with an all-new four-cylinder engine rated at 13/30 hp and intended to replace the very successful 12/24 hp model alongside which it was originally built.

The Citroen Model C4 was powered by a side-valve engine with a 1.6-liter displacement and breathed through a single carburetor. It developed 30 horsepower which was sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed manual transmission. Drum brakes in the front and back provided the stopping power and the suspension was comprised of conventional semi-elliptic leaf springs. Body styles included a tourer and saloon.

In 1934, Citroen introduced the revolutionary Traction Avant that established it as one of the most innovative automobile manufacturers.
