1991 Chrysler New Yorker Navigation
The name 'New Yorker' was part of the Chrysler line for many years, first appearing in 1938 as a trim level named the 'New York Special' on the Imperial line, becoming a standalone model in 1940 and continuing to 1996. By 1988, the Chrysler New Yorker had undergone thirteen styling revisions, with the latest designs bearing no resemblance to any E-Body model it replaced, with upright styling to the newly introduced Dodge Dynasty. Power was from a Mitsubishi-sourced three-liter engine, and in 1989 it was backed by a new four-speed Ultradrive automatic transmission. Trim levels included the base and Landau, with the latter having a rear-quarter vinyl top. In 1990, the base model was called the 'Salon,' and the Landau was dropped in 1991. The Fifth Avenue, priced at 20,875 in 1991, added automatic speed control, speed-actuated power door locks, power six-way adjustable front 50/50 bench seats, and automatic load-leveling rear suspension. An optional automatic air suspension system was offered on the Fifth Avenue, along with an eight-way power driver's seat with two-position memory, a sunroof, and Mark Cross leather seats. The Fifth Avenue had a longer wheelbase, larger width, and a longer length than the standard New Yorker. Production of the New Yorker continued through 1993.
Standard equipment included tinted glass, concealed quad halogen headlights, rack and pinion steering, driver's side airbag, electro-mechanical instrument cluster, rear window defroster, improved ergonomic climate controls, graphic message center, and power windows. Optional equipment included electronic speed control, tilt steering, remote keyless entry, electronic speed control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, headlight delay, automatic day and night rearview mirror, speed-activated door locks, and security alarm. Chrysler produced 14,348 examples of the New Yorker Salon in 1991 and 40,918 of the Fifth Avenue. 1992 brought about a more rounded appearance in the front and back, and a padded landau roof was optional on the Salon. The final generation of the New Yorker was introduced in 1994 and continued through 1997.
