1930 Mercedes-Benz Model 710 SSK

The Mercedes-Benz SSK (W06) was a high-performance automobile built in Bremen, Germany, from 1928 to 1932. The name is an abbreviation of Super Sport Kurz, German for 'Super Sport Short' and the vehicle was an evolution of the 1927 Modell S (S for Sport), which was based on the Modell K (K for 'Kurzer Radstand' which means short wheelbase) variant of the Mercedes-Benz Typ 630. The wheelbase of the SSK was 19 inches shorter than the Model S, and its engine was from the Modell SS, a supercharged 7-liter straight-6 unit that offered approximately 200 to 300 metric horsepower and over 500 lb-ft of torque (depending on configuration and tune). The supercharger on the SSK's engine became engaged with the throttle pedal was fully depressed, and then given an extra push. The supercharger became disengaged when backing off the throttle.

Mechanical Specification
The SSK was the last car designed by Ferdinand Porsche for Mercedes-Benz before he left to found his own company.

The Mercedes-Benz SSK had a wheelbase size of 116 inches, an overall length of 167 inches, a height of 68 inches, and a width of 67 inches. Since these were hand-assembled vehicles, the length, width, and height varied depending on coachwork.

The SOHC inline-6 engine displaced 7,020cc and had an alloy block, a cast iron cylinder head, and a Roots-type supercharger. It was paired with a four-speed non-synchro manual transmission and behind the center lock Rudge wire wheels were drum brakes. The suspension used a beam axle at the front, a torque tube live axle at the rear, and semi-elliptical springs all-round.

Production
The Mercedes-Benz SSK was an exclusive automobile with fewer than forty examples built during its production lifespan. Approximately half were sold as Rennwagen (racing cars).

Competition
With its throttle-activated supercharger, the Mercedes-Benz SSK was one of the most highly regarded sports cars of its era. With its nimble short-wheelbase chassis, lightweight construction, and advanced mechanical sophistication, the SSK enjoyed a very successful racing career.
