Britain's Fastest Honda Drivers Eager To Sign Off 2017 In Style
•Gordon Shedden aiming to keep top three BTCC run intact
•Matt Neal excited for 'old-school' Brands GP challenge
Halfords Yuasa Racing duo Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal have a final flourish in their sights next weekend (30 September / 1 October), as the fiercely-disputed Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship draws to a close at Brands Hatch.
Following the most recent BTCC outing at Silverstone, Shedden and Neal – who won race three at the celebrated 'Home of British Motor Racing' in commanding fashion – sit respectively third and seventh in the Drivers' classification, with Honda and Halfords Yuasa Racing locked in tight tussles for the runner-up laurels in the Manufacturers' and Teams' tables.
The Civic Type R has always been a potent weapon around Brands Hatch's legendary 'GP' circuit, which staged Formula 1's British Grand Prix on no fewer than 12 occasions between 1964 and 1986. By the same token, the track has traditionally been a happy hunting-ground for Honda, leaving both drivers optimistic about their prospects of signing off the 2017 campaign in style.
Gordon Shedden:
'My main aim for Brands Hatch will be to finish the season on a high – and I'll certainly be giving it a go! I want to bring some silverware home, and obviously third place in the championship is still up for grabs and is very important to me. I've finished inside the top three in the BTCC Drivers' standings every year since 2010, so I want to keep that run going. It's a three-way fight that closed up considerably at Silverstone and there will clearly be some very quick cars in the mix, but I'm confident that the Civic Type R will perform well around Brands GP and I've obviously got good memories of the track, having won the title there three times. There's always a fantastic atmosphere there to end the season and it's the kind of circuit that should play to our strengths, so we need to make sure we exploit that.'
Matt Neal:
'I'm looking forward to having three good races and hopefully coming away with some strong results. The 2017 Civic Type R is the best car we've ever had in the BTCC – an absolute joy to drive. Whilst power does still play a part at Brands GP – which may count against us given the way the regulations currently are – the Civic Type R's strengths are through high-speed turns and under braking, which is what this track is all about. It's old-school, with some ultra-fast, fourth or fifth-gear blind corners and you really need to display big commitment out the back. Even though it's a much longer lap than Silverstone, I'm still expecting it to be fiendishly close in qualifying, so every last hundredth-of-a-second really will count.'
