1963 Buick Riviera

Buick's 1963 Riviera was created in response to the popular four-passenger Ford Thunderbird. The Riviera had originally been conceived as a Cadillac personal luxury coupe with a LaSalle nameplate. It was created under the design leadership of GM Styling chief Bill Mitchell and Ned Nickles, head of GM Styling's Special Production Studio. GM later allowed Divisions other than Cadillac to build Mitchell's proposed personal coupe, and Buick landed the rights to build the new car. The new Buick Riviera was announced as, 'America's Bid for a Great New International Classic Car.'

The exterior styling of the Riviera included frameless side glass, a lower profile, and a crisply sculptured roofline. It used a specially adapted version of the bigger Buick's 'X' frame design, with a 117-inch wheelbase, and powered by the same 325 horsepower, 401 cubic-inch Buick V8 engine found in the larger cars. Nickles' body styling would remain with the Riviera through the 1965 model year.

Buick general manager Edward D. Rollert limited first-year Rivera production to exactly 40,000 units. The 2-door, four-passenger sports coupe had a base price of approximately $4,300. Standard features included a Glare-proof inside mirror, Riviera wheel covers, electric clock, two-speed wipers with washers, safety buzzer, smoking set, bucket seats, courtesy lamps, foam-padded seat cushions, center console, and frameless side windows. They also had a heater and defroster, and a padded instrument panel. Turbine drive was standard equipment.
