The Monte Carlo was introduced in 1970 and served as Chevrolet's first personal luxury coupe. Its nameplate survived six generations through the 2007 model year, albeit with a temporary retirement from 1989 through 1994.

Auction entries : 1Between 1970 and 1972, the Monte Carlo rested on the 'A-Special' platform which it shared with the Pontiac Grand Prix, moving the A-body intermediate chassis for 1973. The first generation of Monte Carlo styling was distinguished by its chromed rectangular grille, a Corinthian helmet, round headlamps with rounded chrome bezels, circular parking lamps positioned within the front bumper, and chrome trim surrounding the perimeter of the rear tail lights. The 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, available only as a hardtop coupe, had a base price of $3,415. Chevrolet would produce 112,599 examples in 1971, with 1,919 examples being equipped with the SS-454 package. New for 1971 was an updated grille with a finer insert mesh. There were rectangular parking lamps and the head-light bezels were squarer. They had the same wheelbase size as in 1970, but the length was increased by an inch. This would be the final year for the SS-454.

Auction entries : 1Standard equipment included power front disc brakes, power ventilation system, electric clock, vinyl burled elm finish instrument panel, concealed wipers, a 350 cubic-inch V8 engine rated at 245 horsepower, glove-box light, and side-guard door beam structure. The two-barrel version of the Turbo-Fire 350 CID V8 produced 165 (net) horsepower, and a four-barrel carburetor setup brought horsepower to 175 (net) hp. The Turbo-Jet 400 with a four-barrel carburetor produced 260 (net) horsepower. The range-topping Turbo-Jet 454 CID V8 produced 285 (net) horsepower.Engine compression ratios were lowered to allow them to use regular leaded, low-leaded, or unleaded gasoline and comply with a GM corporate edict. Although the 454 also had a lower compression ratio, its output increased due to a more aggressive camshaft from the 454 powering the 1970 CHevy Corvette and full-sized sedans. Along with the 454 CID V8, the SS-454 package included bucket seats separated by a console with a horseshoe shifter to control the Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission, Rally wheels, a blacked-out rear panel plus proper SS badging. A plethora of convenience, appearance and performance options meant buyers could construct their Monte Carlo exactly as they needed.
