1919 Pierce-Arrow Captures Best In Show at Third Annual Pinehurst Concours d'Elegance

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. (May 2, 2015) – A 1919 bright purple Pierce-Arrow Model 66 A-4 Tourer, purchased last year by Georgia-based philanthropist and businessman Robert S. 'Bob' Jepson Jr., captured Best in Show at the third annual Pinehurst Concours d'Elegance on Saturday.

'We are so thrilled that we came up here; just a beautiful part of the country,' said the 73-year-old Jepson, who is from Savannah, Ga., and is the current chair of the Georgia Ports Authority. 'And what a bunch of beautiful cars that were here today. The 13 classes were just chalked full of gorgeous and unusual, and just super Concours quality cars.'

The 1919 Pierce-Arrow (pictured below with Jepson), which stands 7 feet tall at its highest point and weighs an amazing 7,000 pounds, was once customized for famous silent movie actor Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle. Its 6-cylinder and 825 cubic inch displacement was the largest made engine for automobiles at the time.

'I think it is the outlandish color that get's people's attention – bright purple with white tires,' Jepson said. 'It's what we call our 'low profile car.' Fatty just had to have that purple and those white tires. I can just see him strutting around Hollywood in that car.

'It gives you good exercise because it's a beast,' Jepson added. 'To turn it in any kind of tight configuration I feel like Popeye with these great big arms. In the short time we have owned it it has given us so much joy, and evidently it gave a lot of people here today a lot of joy. The public loves the car because it's so outlandish.'

The 1919 Pierce-Arrow was featured in the Pre-War American Class (until 1942) and captured Best in Show during Jepson's first Concours showing as the car's new owner. The vintage car previously won Best in Class at Amelia and Pebble Beach Concours.

The vehicle enjoyed a total 'nuts and bolts' restoration in 2007 by Lon Kruger of Scottsdale, Ariz.

The 1919 Pierce-Arrow joins a growing fraternity of stunning and rare cars which have won Best in Show at the upstart Pinehurst Concours. Previous winners include a 1938 Steyr Roadster and 1931 Cadillac 452A – both of which returned to the 2015 event and were displayed prominently side-by-side on the fairways of Pinehurst Resort.
