Polo Supermini Wins Big At 2019 What Car? Awards

Milton Keynes – Volkswagen is starting the new year in winning style with a raft of awards honours. The new generation Polo is today named Small Car of the Year at the 2019 What Car? Awards, where the T-Roc compact SUV and Touran MPV also pick up price point honours in their respective categories. Meanwhile new Polo, along with the up! city car, also claimed trophies at this morning's Company Car Today CCT100 Awards.

At the influential What Car? awards the Polo triumphed in the Small Car of the Year category, fending off other price point winners to take the title, with the exacting judges commenting: 'The Polo sets the standard for comfort, practicality and refinement in the small car class, while its frugal 1.0-litre petrol engine and strong resale values make it a good long-term buy, and Volkswagen has kept the pricing sensible. There are no weaknesses in its armour.'

In addition to the Polo's success the T-Roc took the win as 'Best small SUV for more than £20,000', a year after being commended at the 2018 What Car? Awards in the publication's Safety Award. On this year's accolade, the judges said: 'The T-Roc is a cracking small SUV. Its 1.5-litre petrol engine offers a strong turn of performance, and Design versions come loaded with kit. This is also one of the best-riding cars in this class, and it handles tidily too. That it costs a lot less than some rivals is just an added bonus.' The prize comes soon after the T-Roc was named Small Car of the Year by Company Car and Van earlier this month, adding to an already successful 2019 awards collection.

Continuing a run of success at four consecutive What Car? Awards, the flexible, practical Touran seven seater scooped the prize for 'Best MPV for between £20,000-£30,000' at the 2019 ceremony. 'Opt for a Volkswagen Touran and you'll find the same level of plushness that you'd get in a Golf, but with extra practicality. It can genuinely seat seven adults and is better to drive than rivals,' said the judges.

What Car? Editor, Steve Huntingford, said: 'Volkswagen's cars are consistently among the class leaders, which is all the more impressive when you consider how diverse its range is. The brand's successes at the 2019 What Car? Car of the Year Awards reflect this, with the small but classy Polo winning at one end of the scale, across the rest of Volkswagen's extensive range.

'With the ID. electric family car and a new Golf set to be revealed later this year, it seems there's plenty of opportunity for further Volkswagen success at the 2020 Awards.'

The Polo's appeal is equally clear in a fleet and business sense, too. The new car earned the title of Supermini of the Year from Company Car Today at the publication's second CCT100 Awards, with Editor Paul Barker applauding the car's mix of qualities. He said: 'Volkswagen's Polo won out in one of the most closely-fought sectors of all, and proves that a desirable badge can also make sense in terms of overall running cost.

'The Polo impresses for all the sensible things such as efficiency, residual value and cost per mile, but in a high-quality and practical package with VW badge appeal.'

Also impressing the judges at Company Car Today, for the second year in a row was the diminutive but capacious up!, which scooped the title's City Car of the Year accolade. The panel remarked that the compact Volkswagen 'proves that high-quality little cars can also be fun and cost-effective'. Barker added: 'The up! is at its best around town, but also surprisingly capable and spacious, making it a versatile car that keeps running costs low.'

Reflecting on the winning start to 2019 Volkswagen UK Head of Marketing, Geraldine Ingham, said: 'Such a varied mix of awards, in important consumer and business titles, clearly demonstrates the diverse strengths of the Volkswagen range. These wins are a great boost for the brand as it prepares for an especially exciting year, with several important new models coming as well as an ongoing emphasis on broadening the appeal of our electric cars.'
