2019 Mazda CX-5 Earns IIHS Advanced Pedestrian Crash Prevention RatingMazda Vehicles Continue to be Among the Safest on the Road

WASHINGTON, DC (February 21, 2019) – Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced that its 2019 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) advanced rating for automatic emergency braking systems, the nonprofit institution's second highest rating.

The 2019 CX-5 hosts many new technological features that help improve on the vehicle's comfort, convenience and safety. The CX-5 was one of five vehicles that earned the advanced rating under the IIHS's new, more stringent automatic emergency braking systems as part of its pedestrian crash prevention ratings. The CX-5's standard Smart City Brake Support and 360°View Monitor were also instrumental to CX-5 meeting the IIHS safety criteria.

The pedestrian autobrake test is the fourth crash avoidance evaluation in the Institute's lineup of safety tests. Under the new program, vehicles rate as basic, advanced or superior based on their ability to avoid or mitigate a crash with pedestrian dummies in three different test track scenarios run at different speeds. The CX-5 had significant speed reductions in every test scenario, meaning it almost avoided and, in some cases, did avoid striking the pedestrian dummies.

'Our Mazda Proactive Safety Philosophy guides us to develop cars and crossover SUVs that are both nimble and responsive to help a driver avoid incidents altogether,' said Masahiro Moro, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations and managing executive officer, Mazda Motor Corporation. 'At Mazda we are not only concerned about the safety of those behind the wheel but those who come into contact with our vehicles every day. We are committed to producing beautifully designed vehicles that push the boundary of form and function.'

The IIHS is an independent, non-governmental safety-testing organization, funded by the insurance industry. For more information, visit IIHS.org.
