Driven by Sound: BMW M2 project from Eisenmann Exhaust Systems honors a DTM classic

by Eisenmann | November 26, 2024
Based in the Swabian town of Hemmingen, the technicians at S&R Eisenmann have dedicated themselves to designing and manufacturing premium sport exhaust systems for over 30 years, true to their evocative motto: 'Driven by Sound'. The Eisenmann team, led by owner and CEO Marcel Brinkwirth, have now released the project vehicle. Based on the latest generation of the BMW M2, it demonstrates how visually and acoustically innovative product design can be united with Eisenmann's traditional craftmanship to achieve technical perfection.
As an alternative, the Race version offers an added dose of sound but is not permitted for use on German roads, and is therefore only intended for export or motorsport use. The Eisenmann rear muffler also refines the M2 significantly in visual terms: its two 110 mm double tailpipes feature Eisenmann's Signature Sidecut design, a carbon fiber jacket and carry the company's lettering. The tailpipes are also available in black anodized chromium and aluminum variants. And that's far from the end of the customization options, as the Eisenmann team is happy to accommodate special requests from its customers.
For a striking look that has become very popular in the BMW and wider motorsport community, the compact-yet-powerful coupé has been given a vinyl wrap that references one of the most beloved and tradition-steeped BMW motorsport liveries of all time. Eisenmann CEO Marcel Brinkwirth and his team opted for a Warsteiner design wrap, with the M colors emblazoned on a white base, in homage to the successful E30 M3 DTM touring cars of the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1989, for example, Roberto Ravaglia drove his BMW E30 M3 Evo, with its Warsteiner design, to the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) title – the zenith of this era. Of course, this historic design has been adapted for use on Eisenmann's BMW M2 and now features the logos of partners involved in the project.
The motorsport character invoked by the DTM wrap is continued seamlessly by the Alpha-N aerodynamic kit, which is made from carbon fiber, along with the Proline PFM forged rims, which measure 20' and 21' on the front and rear axles and feature a delicate cross-spoke stars in a white finish. The wheels are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires measuring 285/30R20 on the steering axle and 295/25R21 on the drive axle. A KW V4 Clubsport coilover suspension, complete with adjustable top mounts, ensures the tires cling tightly to the asphalt.
The Eisenmann M2 also features another upgrade manufactured in house with a view to potential motorsport use: the exceptionally robust Eisenmann Clubsport rollbar in racing white. Featuring reinforcing gusset plates with lasered Eisenmann logos, it creates a true motorsport look while also protecting those inside the M2 if the worst comes to pass. You'll certainly feel safe and sound inside this M2!
The Eisenmann engineers' expertise also includes developing, designing and producing customized, exclusive small-batch series. Past examples have included special projects for renowned companies, such as Mechatronik.

Take Eisenmann's hand-made, slip-on rear muffler, for instance. Featuring flap control and typical twin-flow design, it emits the characteristic, unmistakable Eisenmann sound: powerful and masculine, but by no means excessively loud or irritating. What's more, the Eisenmann exhaust system avoids any legal complications. Thanks to its EC type approval certificate, the Sport version installed on the project vehicle does not require any formal registration – although the factory-fitted center muffler is removed during its installation.
The S&R Eisenmann exhaust system portfolio naturally extends far beyond this M2 (G87). For instance, similar parts are also available for M3 and M4 models of the G8x series, which are close relations in technical terms. Beyond that, of course, the Eisenmann portfolio includes popular, often downright legendary products for older BMW series, including for the V10 E60/E61 M5 and E63/E64 M6 sportsters along with a range of E36 and E46 classics. In many cases, Eisenmann customers have the choice between Sport exhaust systems, which can be registered for road use in Germany, and the more acoustically powerful Race versions.
