Chevrolet's crossover earns repeat place on Edmunds.com/Parents list

DETROIT – The Chevrolet Traverse is one of the 10 Best Family Cars of 2014, according to Edmunds.com and Parents magazine. It is the second consecutive year Traverse made the list in the SUV category.

Criteria for consideration included strong safety – Traverse earned a Top Safety Pick recommendation in 2013 from the Insurance Institute for Highway safety and has a 5-star rating in government crash tests – efficiency, value and style.

'Traverse's winning combination blends the capability and roominess of a traditional SUV with the attributes of a crossover, including a car-like driving experience, low step-in height and good efficiency on the highway,' said Steve Majoros, marketing director of Chevrolet cars and crossovers.

The recognition adds to Traverse's accolades for the year. It also was named one of Kelley Blue Book's 12 Best Family Cars for 2014.

Demand for Traverse is up, too, with sales jumping 24 percent in May from year-ago numbers for the month.

Safety: Traverse leads with the segment's only front seat center air bag. It deploys from the inboard side of the driver's seat and inflates between the driver and front passenger, providing added protection for both front occupants.

Traverse also offers advanced crash-avoidance technologies, including forward collision alert and lane departure warning that use a camera and sensors to alert the driver with visual cues on the dashboard, as well as audible signals.

Efficiency: Traverse's standard 3.6L V-6 uses direct injection technology to deliver up to 288 horsepower (215 kW) and EPA-rated highway fuel economy of 24 mpg. That's comparable with competitors' SUVs and crossovers, many of which cannot match Traverse's roominess or capability. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,200 pounds (2,358 kg). All-wheel drive also is available.

Value: Traverse is designed for families, from easily cleanable seats and multiple USB ports to an available power liftgate and available rear-seat entertainment system. The second-row seat comes with a pair of captain's chairs or a three-passenger bench. Each configuration implements the SmartSlide feature that allows unobstructed access to the third-row bench seat with one hand, which makes it easy for children to operate.

The third-row seat can comfortably accommodate three adult passengers and Traverse's 24.4 cubic feet (691 liters) of cargo room behind its third row is the most storage space in the segment.

Chevrolet also supports Traverse owners with two years/24,000 miles (whichever comes first) of scheduled maintenance, which covers four oil changes, tire rotation and a 27-point inspection.

Style: Traverse's exterior design is centered on its Chevrolet heritage, with the classic gold bowtie positioned on a three-bar grille. Inside, premium materials include soft-touch surfaces on the instrument panel and front door uppers, contrasting stitching, chrome and silver accents and available blue ambient lighting that glows throughout the cabin.

A center stack houses illuminated climate controls and showcases a 6.5-inch-diagonal color touch radio with the available Chevrolet MyLink or MyLink with navigation infotainment systems.

Enhanced connectivity and convenience comes to the 2015 Traverse with Siri Eyes Free, which enables iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 users to access Siri via steering wheel controls to check calendar entries, have text messages read and respond to them, place calls or call up music. Android phone users can also use the steering wheel controls to access their phone's voice recognition features.
