MAZDA STATEMENT ON SAFETY RECALL 7914J FOR CERTAIN MAZDA6, RX-8, MAZDASPEED6, B-SERIES AND MPV VEHICLES

October 23, 2014 by Mazda

WASHINGTON, DC (October 21, 2014) – Mazda Motor Corporation is conducting a recall of certain 2003-2007 Mazda6, 2004-2008 RX-8, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6, 2004-2005 MPV, and 2004 B-Series Trucks that were originally sold in, or currently or previously registered in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, which had consistent high levels of humidity. Approximately 44,000 US vehicles and 2,600 Puerto Rico vehicles are affected.

In certain vehicles with continued exposure to high levels of humidity over long periods, the driver and/or front passenger air bag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure in the event of a crash where the front air bag is designed to deploy. The excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator housing to rupture with metal fragments, which may increase the risk of injury to the vehicle occupants.

Mazda has received one report of a driver injury during frontal airbag deployment.

Owners of record of affected vehicles, except B-Series Truck owners, were notified via first-class mail on Friday, October 17. When the B-Series Truck replacement parts are available, those owners will also be notified.
