1970 Ford Mustang Navigation
With only 498 Boss 429 Mustangs built as 1970 models, along with two Boss 429 Cougars, these cars homologated the Boss 429 engine for NASCAR racing that won the 1969 championship. This Mustang is one of only two Boss 429s known to have been converted to road racing configuration and campaigned in International Motor Sports Association Camel GT competition.
Original owner Neil Potter of Deltona, FL, purchased this car in 1970 at Jim Blackman Ford in Sebring. During 1974, he converted it to road racing specifications in preparation for the 1975 Sebring 12 Hours of Endurance road race.
Potter teamed with Bob Gray and Terry Keller as car No. 49 to finish, not running after 54 laps, in 34th position among 69 starters. Potter then ran this car in the 1975 Daytona 250 to finish 21st in GT-Over 2 -liter class. Returning to Daytona for the 24 -Hours of 1976, Potter teamed with William Gray and Luis Sereix to finish 27th in GTO class.
In the Sebring 12 -Hour of 1976, Potter and William Boyer completed the competition with 112 laps in 22nd position in GTO class, 38th overall. The final long distance road race for this Mustang was the 1977 running of the Sebring 12-Hour; again the Potter/Boyer team raced, as car No. 44, to complete 142 laps in the race dominated by Over 2-Liter cars, finishing 21st in class and 34th overall with an engine that had been out of production since late 1969.
