• GM Foundation grants STEM scholarships for fifth consecutive year

DETROIT – The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, funded by the General Motors Foundation, will accept applications for 2015 scholarships from Monday, Jan. 5, through 5 p.m. EST on Friday, Feb. 27.

This is the fifth year Buick Achievers scholarships will be awarded to students who excel in the classroom and give back to their communities. Special consideration is given to students who are female, minorities, first-generation college students, military veterans and military dependents.

To be eligible for the program, high school seniors or current undergraduate students must be seeking a college degree in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), or other eligible fields related to the automotive industry.

'Our country is in need of STEM grads, as the focus on innovation and technology continues to sharpen,' said GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard. 'Through the Buick Achievers Scholarship program, we are helping shape the next generation of leaders and innovators for the automotive industry and other sectors that are so important to the future of our country.'

For Buick Achiever, Kettering University alumnus and GM employee Frisco Pullom, this scholarship provided the freedom to focus on his education.

'My first semester after receiving scholarship funds, I was able to remove work and fundraising from my schedule, and I made the dean's list for the first time in my academic career,' said Pullom. 'After graduation, I was able to secure a position with General Motors as a value chain engineer.'

'It feels good to be able to contribute to a company that is committed to helping students prepare for their careers,' he said.
